Minoru Yasui was a fighter for justice. He spent a year in jail for challenging the curfew order issued by the Federal Government to Japanese Americans during World War II. The City of Denver has named one of its office buildings for Min to
honor his leadership, as Director of the Office of Human Rights, in making Denver a better place for all it's residents. The City
also has offered space in the lobby for a permanent exhibit telling Min's story, and the story of the Japanese American experience. The Mile-Hi Chapter of the JACL has accepted the opportunity to create a memorial worthy of Minoru and Japanese Americans.
JACL is accepting donations for this project to honor Min Yasui's place in American history.
Ron Abo, representing Abo,Cervantes,Loos,Prieve Architecture, is the architect commissioned to update the Minoru Yasui
Building lobby. The building, located in Denver's busy downtown center, was formerly a hotel renovated as part of the City
and County of Denver office complex. The Bust of Min Yasui will be placed at a prominent location in the entry. The plan
will utilize full wall graphics to present Min Yasui contribution to Denver. Elaine Shiramizu, owner of Elaine Shiramizu Graphic
Design is commissioned to develop the permanent memorial. Elaine has done a wonderful job to design the memorial.
The design concepts are presented at the top of this page.
These illustrations represent the quality of the Ron Abo design and Elaine's graphic design for the new Memorial. The exhibit will include two wall murals. The person image shows the general size for the proposed murals.
